How do I download?
Go to the download page for instructions on how to get and install iGlance.

Does iGlance work on Unix or Mac?
Unfortunately not yet, but this is certainly the plan. Subscribe to the mailing list and I'll email you when this is ready. Or, if you're a developer, contact me and help me port to Mac or Unix today!

How do I configure my camera?
In the options screen (choose Options from the buddy list) choose Configure Camera in the list on the left. Then choose your video hardware device from the list on the right. When you see a live camera preview below, you're all set.

How do I configure my microphone?
In the options screen (choose Options from the buddy list) choose Configure Microphone in the list on the left. Then choose your audio hardware from the list on the right. When you see a live audio waveform below, you're all set.

What if my camera or microphone doesn't work with iGlance?
Contact me and I'll get you hooked up. Unfortunately there are a zillion varieties of audio and video devices, and all seem to be slightly different. If I haven't caught yours yet, let me know and I'll do what I can.

How do I add a buddy to my buddy list?
Click Add Buddy on the buddy list, enter the name of your buddy, and then click Add. If he's online right now, you'll connect to him immediately.

How do I "push to talk"?
Just click on a buddy's image, wherever it appears (in the buddy list, in the chat window, etc.). Continue holding the button down while you talk, and release when you're done. Or, double-click in order to talk "hand's free", and click Mute on the "Talking to..." window in the upper-left corner of your screen when done.

How do I text chat with a buddy?
Just double-click on a user's name to open the text chat window. Enter the message to send in the lower-left box, and press Enter to send. Click Done when finished in order to close both your and his chat window.

How do I share a window?
Just right-click on a buddy's name and choose Share Window, then choose the name of the window you want to show to your buddy. A "Sharing with..." window will appear at the top of your screen, and your window will appear in a window on your buddy's screen. Point using your mouse cursor within your window, and he'll see it on his side, and vice versa. Click Enable remote control on the "Sharing with..." window to allow your buddy to control your window. To finish sharing, just exit the "Sharing with..." window as normal.

How do I send a file?
Just right-click on a buddy's name and choose Send File, then choose the file you wish to send using the file browser. On his side a file browser will appear asking to where he wants to save the file, and when he clicks Save the transfer will start. You can monitor the file transfer progress in the "File Transfer" window, or just let it go in the background.

How do I configure my privacy settings?
Everyone has a different comfort level with regards to privacy, and comfort levels change over time as your experiences change. In the options screen (choose Options from the buddy list) click Privacy Settings in the list on the left, and then review the choices in the pane to the right. Currently there are three options that work together to produce the rules that affect when others can see you. These options are:
  • Do you want to be public or private?
Choose "Public" if you want to allow some people to see you, and "Private" to remain hidden. "Private" is effectively the same as turning your camera off, but is easier to switch. Right-click on the task-try icon to quickly switch from public and private.

  • When public, who will you let see you?
Choose "Only buddies who I can see" if you are concerned about others seeing you when you can't see them (such as when they don't have a webcam installed). Otherwise, choose "All my buddies" to let your buddies see you even without a webcam of their own. At no time can anyone not on your buddy list ever see you, regardless of your settings. Likewise, when private, nobody can see you.

  • When public, when will you let your buddies see you?
Choose "Only when I am talking" if you only want to be seen when you are actually talking. In this way, if you aren't actively talking (or in a call) with another buddy, you know nobody can see you. Alternatively choose "Always" so buddies can see you whenever they look at their buddy list.
